Japanese Trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Mashable discusses seven things we learn from this trailer, which features different scenes than the American one:

1. Goldenrod is back, now with 20% less gold

c3poleia

Threepio, everyone’s favorite protocol droid of ambiguous sexuality, is back. We’ve known this for years. Even before the casting announcement, we knew Threepio and Artoo would be in every Star Wars movie by inviolable tradition.

What we didn’t know is where Goldenrod would show up and with whom. He didn’t seem to be with Artoo in the previous trailers, which showed Luke (shrouded under a robe) and Artoo together. Now we see Threepio hanging out with Leia, who also gets her first appearance in a trailer while not sobbing into Han Solo’s chest. (Come to think of it, maybe Threepio is the reason she’s sobbing into Han’s chest.)

Also, as you can see in the GIF above, Threepio has a red arm. We’ve also known this for quite some time; his arm has been red in much of the merchandising and related advertising, most recently in an epic Duracell commercial.

Instead, this part is meant to tout the mystery of how Threepio got that red arm. This will be revealed in a special Star Wars Marvel comic coming in December. (Your puny attempts at marketing are no match for the power of Disney brand synergy.)

Parents who do not like buying comic books for their kids should not look at the screen for this:

2. Chewie wants to hold your hand

chewie

“And when I touch you I feel Wookiee inside…”

3. Finn, meet Rey. Rey, Finn.

finrey

This one could be a huge deal: Finn and Rey swap names for the first time on what is clearly the Millennium Falcon. We’ve previously seen them hanging out under a shade structure, running around being blown up and shot at by Stormtroopers, TIE fighters and — at another point in the trailer — flame-thrower troopers.

So the fact they swap names for the first time on the Falcon either means they had no time for such social niceties during the attack, or that the attack happens second and Rey the scavenger discovers the Millennium Falcon on a Jakku junkyard much earlier in the film.

4. Quit following me, kid

reybb8

Doesn’t it seem like BB-8 is bugging Rey, who wants to be a nobody? We know he’s been in Poe Dameron’s X-Wing fighter. Why is he — or, if one rumor is to be believed, she — harassing a random scavenger? Unless she’s not so random …

There’s a clue to why that might be the case in Rey’s dialogue, also revealed for the first time. “I know all about waiting,” she says. “My family …” is almost certainly a family we’ve heard of before.

5. Rey, a captive of Kylo Ren

reylightsaber

Now we know that the movie’s three leads encounter Kylo at some point. Poe Dameron is tortured by him; Finn takes up a blue lightsaber against him; and here, in what appears to be the same forest setting, Rey also meets the business end of Kylo’s weapon, Sparky McMedieval Lightsaber. And she can’t move out of its way.

6. J.J. Abrams loves classic movie references

tiefighters

If you didn’t spot the reference, go to the bottom of film appreciation class. Apocalypse Now, of course.

Apocalypse Now

Referencing Apocalypse Now is particularly appropriate given that George Lucas was planning to direct that film — until Francis Ford Coppola made Lucas choose between Apocalypse and Star Wars. So Lucas put his Vietnam message in Star Wars instead, with the Empire intended to represent the U.S. military.

7. No, really, J.J. Abrams loves classic movie references

starwars_sunset

The setting sun. The moisture vaporators. The desert setting. All you need is an extra sun (nah, too obvious) and a swelling, rising John Williams orchestra (almost certainly). Hey, here’s one.

10 Star Wars Scenes You’ve Never Seen (unfortunately)

When you think about how valuable it would have been to include some of these – and how they would have linked storylines or scenes that otherwise seem disjointed or isolated – there’s no argument for cutting them that makes enough sense to justify their exclusion. Oh, and also: more #twincest!

UK Star Wars Stamps

star wars stamp

As usual, England is way cooler than everywhere else and is proving this by releasing its beautiful Star Wars-themed stamps.

The United Kingdom’s national postal service, Royal Mail, will be releasing a series of 18 collectible Star Wars stamps that feature new (Kylo Ren, Rey, and Finn) and classic characters (Darth Vader and Yoda), as well as vehicles from the legendary sci-fi films. The beautiful Star Wars-themed stamps are currently available to pre-order online from the Royal Mail website and will release on October 20th, 2015.

Is it just me, or could the Storm Trooper in this picture be saying, ‘Hey girl, check out this fierce new cloak I just bought, isn’t it just the perfect look for fall?’ I feel like our favourite pop culture commentator, Jonathan the Hairdresser, could come up with a real nice description here.

Weeping-Angels-

Sweeeeet. And, terrifying.

This set of Doctor Who Weeping Angel String Lights contains 10 angels: 5 with their faces covered and 5 attacking. But wait. There’s more! Or there can be. Multiple strings can be plugged into each other, so you can basically have as many Weeping Angels in one place as you’d like. Honestly, one is too many for us.

And yes, like we said above, the you can set the lights themselves to blink. We’re not entirely sure what that means in terms of quantum locking, but with Weeping Angels it’s pretty safe to assume it probably isn’t good.

These could be ours for only $24.99! For further deets, go to Think Geek here: http://www.thinkgeek.com/product/ikvp/

Star Wars: The Force Awakens poster revealed!

star wars poster

I just watched The Empire Strikes Back (though I don’t think I’ve ever used the ‘The’ in that title before now) and I hafta say, it was TOTALLY AWESOME. Even though I’ve seen it a million times, I still experienced the freaked-outness of seeing those AT-AT (which stands for All Terrain Armoured Transport, in case you did not know) Walkers, the awe at Yoda’s profound wisdom, the satisfaction of Han and Leia finally kissing and the suspense of Luke and Darth Vader’s battle. Oh, and a new observation: Chewie is super sentimental! He’s the one yelling when Han gets frozen, he goes back looking for CP30, and he hugs Luke before he leaves them. Aw! That wookie is a big ol’ softie!

The Far and Wide Reach of Star Wars’ Influence on Film and TV

leia badass

This looks pretty fucking cool.

“A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away…” an iconic series was born that would shape the course of film for decades to come. Just the opening quote — a phrase we all know — is so ingrained in popular culture that even people who haven’t seen a single Star Wars movie have heard the line.

As we gear up for the release of Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens, the first film in the series to be helmed by someone other than George Lucas, we decided to look back at the impact that this franchise has had, not only the science fiction landscape, but on pop culture as a whole.

The Fastest Ship in the Universe

Ever wondered how human-made space ships compare to some of the fictional ones that we’ve been introduced to on screen so far? Well, wonder no more: here is a chart showing us how they all measure up.

‘Too Many Marvel Movies’ – a Fangirl’s Lament

This animated video is kick-ass for a lot of reasons. One, it shows an all-kinds-of-diverse fangirl club whose chairperson is called ‘Headmaster’. Two, its walls are adorned with Doctor Who posters and its members wear garb from various fandoms – Star Trek, GoT, Harry Potter, Star Wars, etc. Third, the Headmaster spanks the group with the FOMO paddle to force them to agree to go watch Ant Man. As someone who just last night refused an invitation to go see it, this video is giving me pause to consider the ramifications of my decision.

Comic Con 2015

If you read this regularly you’ll notice I’ve been absent for the past few weeks, due to my visit to a magical and far-away universe where I rode a unicorn and played the lute with my centaur friends.

footage not found 2

Anyhoo, Comic Con just happened in San Diego, and here’s a fun video of people bringing their cosplay A-Game. (Costumes of note: a fellow Red Viper; the terrifying clown from American Horror Story; and a spot-on Walter Sobchak from The Big Lebowski).

Also out of Comic Con: trailers for things we may or may not be interested in. I’m loyal to my love of Heroes, and so am stoked for Heroes: Reborn, and of course there’s Star Wars. The Suicide Squad just looks mean… I know I’m seeing the clips out of context, but I can’t watch someone being tortured (possibly electrically?). Here are a few in case you missed them:

Andddd then there’s season 9 of Doctor Who, the trailer of which has me eager to get through season 8 already! And nerd crossover bonus: who joins the cast but our favourite assassin-in-training, Arya Stark – er, I mean, Maisie Williams!
