WordPress changed their format a few weeks ago, and since then I haven’t been able to include video links in my posts. Given that this is a pop culture blog, this is a huge obstacle that I can’t seem to beat so far. I’ll try to look into what I can do about it, as there has to be some fucking way around it, but in the meantime, you won’t be hearing from me. Thanks for reading and have a wonderful holiday season!!
Friends, WordPress seems to have a new format and it won’t let me type after I insert the picture so hopefully I can do this in a way that actually works. (Fuck you too, WordPress.)
So, shocking absolutely no one, Jon Snow survives. How, is TBD (although my vote is with fucking Milisandre, gods dammit). For me the pisser is that HBO had the producers and actors all stating, definitively, and with passion, that he was dead. And in fact, even while he was being stabbed repeatedly I felt the jaded disappointment of knowing that he was going to survive this mutinous murder attempt. I was shocked when people thought that he might actually be (that is, stay) dead.
That being said… admittedly I am looking forward to the role he plays in what comes next. Will Tormund still be his new bestie? Will he be reunited with any of his siblings? Will he and his sister, Princess Leia – er, Queen Daenerys – meet up and ride dragons into Kings Landing and/or the land of the icy undead? So many questions. (Just in case you would like to know where we stand in the waiting game: approximately 22 weeks to go, friends.)
WTF, this is an actual movie. Which I will be seeing early and often! Because nothing says holiday cheer like a demon-goat-anti-Santa terrorizing a dysfunctional family in a suburban winter wonderland.
I shit you not, friends. In Japan – wait, need I say more? Japan has a cafe for your stuffed animals.
No human food is served nor are there any human accommodations, rather the cafe offers an opportunity for a person’s favorite stuffed animal to get the royal treatment. The beloved plushy is sent via overnight mail and returns with photos and other goodies from their overnight adventure. Reservations are filling up despite the fact that the cafe only opened yesterday. ~ http://laughingsquid.com/a-full-service-cafe-in-tokyo-japan-that-caters-exclusively-to-stuffed-animals/
I, um, I….
Ahem. Well. As you can tell, I’m at a loss for words. However, if you would like your stuffed animal to make the trip to this cafe, go here for details (warning: being Japanese, the site is in, well, Japanese): http://nuigurumicafe.com/
I watched the two existing seasons of Penny Dreadful in 10 days. It is pure gothy heaven: Victorian era setting and clothes, beautiful dialogue, themes of death, alienation and the supernatural, graphic violence and sex (featuring Billie Piper – aka The Doctor’s companion, Rose Tyler), and literary characters brought to life off the page, such as Victor Frankenstein and Dorian Gray.
Minifanaticus, an Etsy merchant, has designed this incredibly detailed, and tiny, curio cabinet based on the show. At 4″x6″, I can only imagine the steady hand required to create the cabinet’s contents.
You can buy it here! https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/216538830/the-dreadful-curio-112-1inch-penny?ref=related-3
Also relevant: This article about the five best and worst demons to be possessed by. (Oops – spoiler alert.)
Many of the demons on this list are first mentioned in the Great Grimoire of Honorius. Who was Honorius? Historians aren’t sure, but they think that he was Honorius III, who was the Pope from 1216 to 1227. Whether he wrote the book or not, Honorius is famous among popes for deliberately doing ceremonies to summon demons so he could then banish the demons back down to hell. Apparently, he wanted to be ready to fight Satan at any time, and the demons were his sparring partners. Surgat, of all of these, earns his place on the scary list because he can’t be shaken. He’s described in Honorius-the-Professional-Demon-Ejector’s book with one sentence: “Surgat is he who opens all locks.”

Check out these gorgeous photos by Tim Tadder and his creative associates, who represent the seasons by way of Day of the Dead-styled photographs.
This news story was featured in the CBC news this week:
Snowy owls have flocked to Ontario in huge, rare numbers for the second consecutive year, creating a boon for bird watching and a bane for airport managers. ~ http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/windsor/snowy-owl-epidemic-sweeps-across-ontario-1.2885513
If we look back to Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, it reads as follows:
When Dudley had been put to bed, [Mr. Dursley] went into the living room in time to
catch the last report on the evening news:
“And finally, bird-watchers everywhere have reported that the nation’s
owls have been behaving very unusually today. Although owls normally
hunt at night and are hardly ever seen in daylight, there have been
hundreds of sightings of these birds flying in every direction since
sunrise. Experts are unable to explain why the owls have suddenly
changed their sleeping pattern.” The newscaster allowed himself a grin.
“Most mysterious. And now, over to Jim McGuffin with the weather. Going
to be any more showers of owls tonight, Jim?” ~ Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone
Basically what I’m suggesting (hoping, praying) is that perhaps the increase in snowy owls in Ontario is due some real-life magic. Is that so much to ask for?
Happy Holidays, friends!!!
The fandom is so fun! I didn’t know ‘Thorki’ was a thing, but I can’t say I follow comic shipping super closely. And I don’t judge. If you would love to be the proud owner of this brotherly homolicious t-shirt, go here to order! http://artbyfox.storenvy.com/products/10108668-the-thorki-shirt-s-xl
I am doing some system updates to this site and I don’t know if it is sending each updated post to subsribers… if so, I apologize profusely!!
